Myanmar Welcomes Athletes to the 19th ASEAN University Games


Myanmar – Belmawa. Vice President of Myanmar U Myint Swe officially opened the 2-yearly Southeast Asian student athletes event “The 19th ASEAN University Games” The Opening Ceremony was held in the  Wunna Theikdi Sports Complex Indoor Stadium.

This student-level sport event will include 17 different sports, compete for 1897 medals, consisting of 587 gold, 587 silver and 723 bronze medals. There will be 201 competitions, with 2078 athletes, coaches, and managers from ASEAN member countries.

The event will take place from December 10-19 2018 in the city of Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. The Indonesian student athletes team was accompanied by the Director of Student Affairs, the Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs of the Ministry of Research and Technology, Didin Wahidin, bringing along 192 student athletes, trainers and officials. Indonesia participated in 13 of the 17 sports.

In his speech, Vice President U Myint Swe said to all participants to always remember the purpose of the competition, namely friendship and a sense of solidarity among member nations, especially from the younger generation. Sports competitions also provide opportunities for athletes to show their talent in sports in the ASEAN region, and provide an opportunity for athletes to be able to interact and exchange cultures with fellow ASEAN member nations.

The event was also attended by Myanmar State ministers and officials, ambassadors and officials from the participating nations of the competition. At the end of his speech, Vice President U Myint Swe thanked those in attendance, and officially opened the 2018 19th ASEAN University Games.

At the time of writing, Indonesian student athletes had successfully achieved 8 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals.
