Indonesian Student Athletes Compete in Myanmar


Jakarta – Belmawa. The Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs of the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education sent 180 selected student athletes from Indonesian Universities to theASEAN University Games(AUG) which will be held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. The competition will run for 14 days from 7-20 December 2018 at theMyanmar International Convention Center

This biennial ASEAN sports competition will be attended by ASEAN member nations. The athletes will compete for medals in 13 sports which are wushu, badminton, volleyball, swimming, chess, sepak takraw, athletics, rowing, archery, basketball , petanque, karate, and vovinam.

In his speech, Vice President U Myint Swe said to all participants to always remember the purpose of the competition, to foster friendship and solidarity among member nations, especially the younger generation. Sports competitions also provide opportunities for athletes to show their talent in sports in the ASEAN region, and equally as important it provides an opportunity for student athletes to be able to interact and exchange cultures with fellow ASEAN member nations.

Since it started in 1980 the ASEAN University games under the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC), Indonesia had great success in achieving medals. Through events like this, Indonesian athletes are able to continue to develop, providing opportunities, and gain more competition experience so they may continue to achieve and bring pride to the nation.

At the student athlete send-off event at Ibis Style Tangerang hotel, Director of Student Affairs, Didin Wahidin wished for them to bring pride to the nation, pursue achievements, maintain sportsmanship, and keep up the fighting spirit. Didin hopes that all the student athletes can strive to achieve their best at AUG 2018. Director Didin also wished the athletes well so they may achieve greatness and make the nation proud,

and thanked all parties involved in ensuring the success of this event. "Safe travels and good luck, this great nation awaits your achievements and supports you in our prayers," then Director Didin officially closed the event and sent the student athlete delegates off to Myanmar for the AUG 2018 event.
